Patient Information on the NHS Steroid Card
This can be frightening, but it goes away when you stop taking the steroids. You should contact your advice line urgently if you think you have an infection. Steroids can hide or change the signs and symptoms of some infections. They might also make it harder for your body to deal with an infection.
- Steroid tablets may be recommended if you’re pregnant and have severe asthma.
- This condition makes it more likely that you’ll fracture your bones, sometimes after very minor falls or bumps.
- Young guys who say they took the drug, and no deterioration for the body there.
Many people may be able to reduce their risk by making lifestyle changes such as stopping smoking or losing weight. It has been introduced because we now know much more about the best way to treat people in the hospital setting who are taking long-term steroids. If you do miss a dose, do NOT try to compensate by taking a double dose next time.
What is anabolic steroids cut with?
Anabolic steroids are usually injected into a muscle or taken by mouth as tablets, but they also come as creams or gels that are applied to the skin. In professional sport, 101steroids most organisations ban anabolic steroid use and test competitors for banned steroids. If you do test positive, you may be banned from competing professionally.
- If you have a local anaesthetic, the pain in your joint will ease within a few minutes.
- We explain the most common side effects of this treatment here.
- Users can experience mood changes, irritability and aggression (‘roid rage’).
- If you’re worried about your child taking steroid inhalers, or side effects from steroid tablets, speak to your GP or asthma nurse.
The steroid most commonly used with brain tumours is dexamethasone. They are fast-acting drugs, so the effects caused by the tumour can reduce quite quickly. Corticosteroids are a type of medication that may be offered to you to help your baby if there is a chance that you may give birth early. Steroids are given by an injection into the muscle usually of your thigh or upper arm.

For some conditions, low-dose steroids may be needed for many months or years. One might expect that glucocorticoids would also reduce inflammation in the heart and blood vessels. The researchers call on GPs to regularly monitor and help reduce cardiovascular risk for patients taking glucocorticoids, even those on low doses.

These reactions can be hard to distinguish from the original skin condition. Research has shown that prednisone and prednisolone can also be effective when treating the hair loss condition alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition which may respond to corticosteroid treatment [12-13]. If you have diabetes, you will need increased monitoring of your blood sugar levels while you have the steroids and may need to be admitted to hospital to be offered additional insulin treatment.
Not too little, not too much — it’s all about finding the right balance. It’s important that you don’t stop taking steroids without speaking to the person treating you first. If you normally wear contact lenses, you might need to avoid wearing these while having treatment with steroid eye drops.
Blood clots can develop in the deep veins of your body, usually the leg. A blood clot can be very serious if it travels to your lungs (pulmonary embolism), although this isn’t common. Steroids can increase the number of white blood cells in your blood. Let your doctor or nurse know if you have any problems with your eyes.
Steroids can affect the eyes, for example by making glaucoma worse or causing cataracts. They can also cause a problem with your eyes known as serous chorioretinopathy (see-russ core-ee-oh-ret-in-op-ath-ee), which happens when fluid collects in part of the eye. If you notice any changes in your eyesight, such as your vision becoming blurry, be sure to let your doctor know as soon as possible. If you or someone else needs urgent help after taking drugs or drinking, call 999 for an ambulance.
Do I need to keep having an osteoporosis drug treatment if I’m no longer on steroids? Your doctor may say you can stop the osteoporosis medication if you were only prescribed it because you were taking steroid tablets. But if your risk of breaking a bone is still higher, your doctor may suggest staying on an osteoporosis medication for longer, before possibly having a pause in treatment after five years. This pause in treatment – sometimes called a ‘drug holiday’ – will only be suitable if you’re on a bisphosphonate drug, such as alendronate.
You may experience some minor side effects such as pain at the injection site. If you have pre-existing or gestational diabetes steroids can affect your blood sugar control. You can find further information on RCOG patient information on Gestational Diabetes. There is less evidence that steroids are helpful after 35 weeks.
We have more information about bone health and looking after your bones. If you have periods, these may become irregular or stop during treatment. Periods usually return to normal once treatment has finished. This also depends on what other cancer treatments you have, such as chemotherapy.
